Barry Wilson studied at Stafford College of Art and Gloucestershire College of Art, Cheltenham. His work has been seen in group exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts and Manchester Academy of Art. He was previously selected for the BP Portrait Award in 1984 and 1992.

This self-portrait was made in the artist’s studio in the Shropshire Hills. Wilson wanted to capture how the grey northern light fltered down to defne the face, while also exploring the foreshortening and distortions of the close oblique angle he had chosen.
