Haiyu Yuan undertook a BA degree at Jiangnan University, China followed by an MA at the Royal College of Art, London. His work has been seen in group exhibitions in London and Shenzhen, China.
The portrait is of the artist’s friend and classmate, Kaiyan, whom he decided to depict after Kaiyan’s relationship with his girlfriend ended. Haiyu Yuan had long wanted to make a portrait in egg tempera and the painstaking technique gave the two men several hours together in which time to capture the nuances of emotion in Kalyan’s face at a difficult time.’
