Charles Williams studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions in the UK, Netherlands and United States and he has been selected for juried group exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and the Threadneedle Prize.

The portrait is of the writer Will Self whom Williams happened to see cycling on the road in Pimlico while he was waiting on the pavement for a friend. Williams made a lightning sketch as soon as he could and later recalled the encounter when in his studio to make this large portrait.
