Sarah Jane Moon gained a BA (Hons) degree in visual arts theory and curatorial practice at the University of Western Australia and undertook studies at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, London. Moon’s work has been seen internationally in the exhibition Queer Art(ists) Now, the annual exhibitions of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and was previously included in the BP Portrait Award in 2019.
The portrait is of the photographer, Lola Flash, whose work has been at the forefront of visual politics for over three decades, challenging gender, sexual and racial stereotypes. Moon says: ‘I felt a huge amount of respect and admiration for Flash. On meeting her, she agreed to be painted and so I arranged an initial sitting in New York where she is based. I wanted the portrait to celebrate her as a working queer artist.’
